Per Deadline, The Toxic Avenger will open nationwide to kick off the Labor Day Weekend on Aug, 29, and the best part of all is that it will be an unrated version. Cineverse found success last year with Terrifier 3, which was also unrated, and went on to become one of the biggest horror hits of 2024, earning nearly $90 million at the box office against a budget of just $2 million dollars.
Created by Llyod Kaufman in 1984, The Toxic Avenger is undoubtedly one of the biggest cult hits to come out of the decade, and would go on to spawn an entire franchise of films. The reboot kicked off Fantastic Fest in 2023, and follows in the footsteps of the original in terms of its plot, which has been slightly updated to suit a modern audience that expects a contemporary twist.
“Set in a fantasy world following janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage), who, after a freak accident, transforms into a mutant vigilante known as Toxie. Armed with his mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.”
Macon Blair Says ‘The Toxic Avenger’ Is Better With a Crowd
Blair echoed those sentiments at the time The Toxic Avenger was picked up by Cineverse a couple of weeks ago, saying in a statement that “It’s so cool that folks will have the chance to see this in theaters, it’s a fun rowdy movie you wanna see with a crowd.” He also added:
“Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh.”
Look for the reboot of The Toxic Avenger in theaters everyone on Aug. 29, 2025, and if you want to relive all the fun of the 1984 original, it’s currently available to stream on a number of platforms, including Tubi, Peacock, Pluto TV, and Prime Video.
